Please read my open letter to Vice President Mike Pence and Congress.    Click here.  If you agree please send a similar letter to Pence, Ryan, and McConnell.

The 2nd Amendment has absolutely nothing to do with the right of an individual citizen to own a gun.  It was written to appease those among our Founding Fathers who opposed a national Army.
This amendment does not simply say “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  It says "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  The important wording in the Amendment is “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state”. The Founding Fathers preferred state militias to a national army.
Our Founding Fathers were afraid of standing armies.  They wanted to maintain the authority of the individual state militias that had made up Washington’s Revolutionary Army.  The members of Congress during that first gun debate believed that “standing armies in a time of peace are dangerous to liberty”. Those were the exact words used in the state of New York’s amendment to the gun debate.
James Madison, political theorist, American statesman, and the 4th President, hailed as the "Father of the Constitution" for his role in drafting and promoting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, believed, “Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.”
Had the early framers of the Constitution supported a standing army during times of peace there would be no need for a “well-regulated militia”, and thus no need for the 2nd Amendment.
Instead, they openly opposed a standing army during times of peace. Want proof? In the entire Constitution, there are no time limits on the power of Congress to raise money and pay for anything – except an Army. We can have a Navy forever. We can have roads or bridges or post offices or pretty much anything else that supports the ‘general welfare’ without limit and in perpetuity. But an Army? That had to be re-evaluated every two years, when all spending for the past two years of army was zeroed out. It's right there in Article 1, Section 8, line twelve reads that Congress has the power: "To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years."
The Founding Fathers were well aware, based on the history of Europe, that military coups by a standing army were a great threat to any nation. So they required a re-evaluation of the need for a national army every two years.
This is what I believe -
A mentally stable, law-abiding citizen should be able to purchase and own a traditional “one shot at a time” pistol or rifle for the purpose of hunting, target shooting, or, in limited situations, protection.  But it should be illegal for an individual or organization to purchase and own an AK-47, an assault rifle, or any such weapon.  By the very nature of its name, the obvious purpose of such a weapon is “assault” and not hunting, target shooting, or protection.
In order to purchase and own a gun an individual should first obtain a license, issued by one’s state of residence – similar to the current driver’s license system.  A thorough background check must be required as part of the licensing process.  And, similar to a driver’s license, in order to obtain a license an individual must pass a written test and a “demonstration” test, like a driving test, to show that the individual knows how to operate and maintain a gun.  As with motor vehicle licenses there would be age restrictions.
And if a person is considered potentially dangerous enough not to be able to fly he or she should not be able to obtain a gun license.  No fly – no gun!
Unfortunately Trump is a “yuuge” supporter of the 2nd Amendment – a position he took during the campaign, as with all of his positions, only because it is what his core followers wanted to hear, so he could continue to bask in the “roar of the crown” at rallies, and to get the NRA endorsement (while Trump defends the 2nd Amendment he apparently has little or no respect for the 1st Amendment, which guarantees free speech and freedom of the press).  And with Republican control of Congress there will be no much needed gun control legislation, and the many tragedies of the past couple of years will no doubt continue.
The reasons Trump is totally unfit to serve as President of the United States are indeed multitudinous.
But if I were to choose one of his proven consistent behaviors that absolutely makes his unfitness a certainty and will probably cause the most damage it would be this -
It is literally impossible to have a normal, intelligent and rational debate, or even discussion, with Trump.
Trump says, “A = B.”
Someone else says, “I disagree. I think A = C.”
A normal, intelligent and rational person would respond, “I believe A = B because . . .” and go on to explain the reasons he thinks A = B, citing legitimate and identifiable sources (other than “most people agree”) to support the belief.
Not Trump.
Trump responds, “You are fat, ugly, stupid, hormonal, weak, sad, incompetent, a loser, etc, etc, etc”.
In other words, Trump is saying to anyone who disagrees with his presumably infallible pronouncements, “You have no value, so your opinion has no value.”
Well Trump, you arrogant buffoon, most of the world believes that it is you who have absolutely no value, and it is your opinions that have absolutely no value! And certainly no basis in truth.
A Trump Presidency will, quite possibly irreparably, diminish the stature and credibility of America in the eyes of the world.
How amazing was Saturday, January 21st!
Millions of people around the world joined together to protest the fact that a dangerous mentally unstable narcissist, a totally unqualified and ignorant reality tv cartoon clown, was selected to be President of the United States despite losing the election by almost 3 Million votes.
Arrogant buffoon Trump is truly a unifying factor! He unites men and women, young and old, gay and straight, Republican and Democrat, conservative and liberal, white, black, brown, red, and yellow, of all faiths and religions to protest his idiocy and denounce and oppose his Presidency.
+ Jennifer Rubin provides “More signs that Trump is out of touch with reality” in her “Right Turn” blog at the WASHINGTON TIMES.
My Twitter response to Jenifer’s post title – “How many signs do we need before we realize we're all in serious danger with this fool at the helm?
Jennifer correctly describes dangerous Donald Trump as – “A man whose ego is so frail that he, like the rooster taking credit for the rising sun, sees all good news as a reflection of his own fabulousness.”
And goes on to observe (highlights are mine) -
The narcissistic personality is ever-present. Every person is judged to be a 'good guy 'or a 'loser' based on what he or she says about Trump. Every bad bit of news is the result of the no-good, sleazy, rotten, most-dishonest-people-he-ever-met media. Terrorist massacres are not tragedies, but vindication that he was 'right' (right about exactly what is not clear). Trump’s seeming inability to take himself out of the equation and assess events, people and policies on their own merits remains the most frightening aspect of his impending presidency.”
And (again, highlight is mine) –
Sure, all presidents have big egos. The problem arises when their psyche impairs their ability to function rationally.”
+ In “Temperament Tantrum” by Susan Milligan at US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT we learn the truth about Trump’s mental instability.
"’Donald Trump is dangerously mentally ill and temperamentally incapable of being president,’ says John D. Gartner, a practicing psychotherapist who taught psychiatric residents at Johns Hopkins University Medical School and is author of 'In Search of Bill Clinton: A Psychological Biography'. Trump, Gartner says, has 'malignant narcissism', which is different from narcissistic personality disorder and which is incurable.
Gartner acknowledges that he has not personally examined Trump, but says it's obvious from Trump's behavior that he meets the diagnostic criteria for the disorder, which include anti-social behavior, sadism, aggressiveness, paranoia and grandiosity.”
Psychoanalyst Otto Kernberg has described malignant narcissism as a syndrome characterized by a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), antisocial features, paranoid traits, and egosyntonic aggression. Other symptoms may include an absence of conscience, a psychological need for power, and a sense of importance (grandiosity).
+ I agree 100% with the STUFF THAT NEEDS TO BE SAID in John Pavlovitz’s post “Let the Record Show” -
I do not believe this man is normal.
I do not believe he is emotionally stable.
I do not believe he cares about the full, beautiful diversity of America.
I do not believe he respects women.
I do not believe the sick and the poor and the hurting matter to him in the slightest.
I do not believe he is a man of faith or integrity or nobility.
I do not believe his concern is for anything outside his reflection in the mirror.
I believe he is a danger to our children.
I believe he is a threat to our safety.
I believe he is careless with our people.
I believe he is reckless with his power.
I believe America will be less secure, less diverse, less compassionate, and less decent under his leadership.”
+ Trump lied again.  We will never see his tax returns unless Congress forces him to make them available to the public.  Pat Garofalo discusses this in the editorial “Tax Returns” Still MIA” at US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT -
"Failing to release his returns certainly isn't the most disqualifying thing about Trump – take your pick from among his misogyny, authoritarian tendencies, willingness to whip up racial animosity amongst his supporters or cavalier attitude toward warfare and nuclear weapons, just for starters – but it is symbolic of the lying, fantasy-based campaign that he has run. It's one final insult to the intelligence of the American electorate."
